This Week in the Garden: February 9, 2025

Overnight the garden was blanketed under 4-5 inches of snow. January and February seem to be the months that we get the most snow, if we’re going to get much or any at all. It can also be quite mild for days or weeks at a time. This morning was clear and sunny with a sparkling blanket of snow laying under a bright blue sky.

One of the main purposes of this blog and the corresponding YouTube channel is to document the creation and evolution of this garden through the seasons from pasture to an established, densely planted garden. Full of trees and shrubs and flowers and garden structures and fruit and vegetables and chickens (eventually) and dogs and family and fun!

Lately, it seems like I’ve mainly had my builder’s hat on as I’m working on two sheds, a privacy screen, the wood base for a greenhouse, site prepping for another shed (how many sheds do you need, Weedy?!), the list goes on. But I love to build and most of the structures will be as much a part of the overall garden as any tree or shrub. And winter can be a good (but cold) time to do things like building garden structures or sheds, especially if you can get any digging/prep/foundation work done before the ground freezes. Then, it’s all above ground work that can be done as the weather and your motivation permits.

So, a quiet week overall but a fairly productive weekend with work progressing on the raised bed vegetable garden tool shed. The two videos below show some of the work on the privacy screen and tool shed (along with some general garden strolls and winter garden tasks) from the last week or two in January.
